Searching Standard: Lapras VMAX Deck

Hello and welcome to another episode of Searching Standard. This week, we're taking a look at a deck from a YouTuber named ZapdosTCG. It features Lapras VMAX SSH 50. Let's start by taking a look at the deck.

With Lapras VMAX SSH 50, you can Knock Out an opponent's Pokemon as early as turn two. Its G-Max Pump attack deals a minimum of 180 damage in this deck (since there are no non-Water Energy 3 sources in this deck). But that's just the base damage this attack can do, since it scales with each additional Water Energy 3 attached to Lapras VMAX SSH 50. This allows you the potential to KO any opposing Pokemon, regardless of their size.

You'll be able to power up Lapras VMAX SSH 50 and your other attackers in no time thanks to the Ice Dance Ability of Frosmoth SSH 64. This Ability allows you to attach as much Water Energy 3 from your hand to your Benched Pokemon as you would like during your turn. You can fully power up any of your Pokemon with this Ability as long as you have enough Water Energy 3 in your hand or cards that allow you the potential to draw into more Water Energy 3.

Suicune DAA 37 is an interesting attacker in this deck. You can power it up while it's on your Bench with Frosmoth SSH 64's Ice Dance Ability, and then when you're able to use Suicune DAA 37's Aurora Loop attack, two of the Water Energy 3 required for the attack will be put back into your hand, allowing you to power up another Pokemon. You may even want to pay the Retreat Cost of Suicune DAA 37 once you make this attack, as there are ways of using Energy from your discard pile in this deck.

Keldeo-GX UNM 47's role in this deck is mostly to hedge against decks relying on Pokemon-GX, including those using Tag Teams. Thanks to Keldeo-GX UNM 47's Pure Heart Ability, you'll prevent all effects of attack, including damage, done to Keldeo-GX UNM 47 by a Pokemon-GX. Keldeo-GX UNM 47 also has a couple of useful attacks, but you have better options for attackers unless your opponent is using Pokemon-GX.

Crobat V DAA 104 and Dedenne-GX UNB 57 are standard additions to most decks thanks to their Abilities which allow you to draw extra cards. Crobat V DAA 104 has the Dark Asset Ability, which allows you to draw cards until you have six cards in your hand. Dedenne-GX UNB 57 has the Dedechange Ability, which allows you to discard your hand and then draw a new hand of six cards. Both Abilities can be very effective ways of helping you cycle through your deck faster to find the cards you need.

Marnie SSH 169 and Professor's Research SSH 178 are additional Trainers that allow you to draw additional cards. Marnie SSH 169 has you shuffle your current hand back into your deck before drawing cards, while Professor's Research SSH 178 has you discard your hand first. Keep these differences in mind when figuring out which one you want to play.

All decks need ways to find its important Pokemon. Quick Ball SSH 179 can find the majority of Pokemon in this deck, but there are a couple of important Evolutions it can't find. If you need to find either Lapras VMAX SSH 50 or Frosmoth SSH 64, you'll want to play Evolution Incense SSH 163. Pokemon Communication TEU 152 helps out when you have a Pokemon you don't need currently, but want a different Pokemon instead, and it doesn't matter whether it's a Basic Pokemon or an Evolution.

Since playing extra Energy cards each turn with Frosmoth SSH 64's Ice Dance Ability is important in this deck, you'll want to ensure you have extra Water Energy 3 in your hand. Capacious Bucket RCL 156 helps you do just that, by allowing you to search your deck for two Water Energy 3 to put into your hand.

This group of cards all offer you ways of utilizing Water Energy 3 that has gone to your discard pile. Ordinary Rod SSH 171 also offers you a way of returning any discarded or Knocked Out Pokemon to your deck.

Both Switch SSH 183 and Boss's Orders RCL 154 help out when making attacks. You can use Switch SSH 183 to allow your Active Pokemon to exchange places with one of your Benched Pokemon that's fully powered up, preferably if you can score a Knock Out in one hit (OHKO). Boss's Orders RCL 154 offers the same possibilities by allowing you to send the opponent's Pokemon to their Bench, bringing up the Benched Pokemon of your choice to their Active Position.

There will be times that you'll want to retreat a Pokemon, but paying its Retreat Cost may be difficult. Air Balloon SSH 156 helps with this by reducing a Pokemon's Retreat Cost by two Energy. You might want to hold onto this to use when your opponent has forced one of your Pokemon to your Active Position when you would rather have them on your Bench.

Wrapping Up

Any Pokemon that has the ability to scale the amount of damage it can do has great potential. Lapras VMAX SSH 50 has that ability, and when paired with Frosmoth SSH 64, you have a match that can deal a lot of damage very quickly.
