Searching Standard: Garchomp & Giratina / Blacephalon Deck

Hello and welcome to another episode of Searching Standard. Garchomp & Giratina-GX UNM 146 is a powerful Pokemon Tag Team that has the potential to dominate tournaments. This week, we'll be taking a look at a deck featuring Garchomp & Giratina-GX UNM 146 that recently came in Second Place at SPE Iquique. We'll start by taking a look at the deck.

As I mentioned before, Garchomp & Giratina-GX UNM 146 has the potential to deal 240 damage by using its Calamitous Slash attack. Of course, this attack will only deal 160 damage if your opponent's Active Pokemon doesn't have any damage counters on it. Luckily, there are ways in this deck that allow you to put damage counters on any of your opponent's Pokemon. You can also use Garchomp & Giratina-GX UNM 146's Linear Attack attack to accomplish this, but by doing so you leave yourself open to a counterattack from your opponent.

With Garchomp & Giratina-GX UNM 146, you also have access to a terrific GX attack in GG End GX. With this attack, if your opponent focuses all of their resources on one of their Pokemon, you can use this attack to discard that Pokemon and all cards attached to it. This can be especially useful if your opponent has a Pokemon with a high amount of HP as their Active Pokemon, acting as a way to stall things while they build up one of their Benched Pokemon. Once they have a fair amount of Energy and Items attached to that Pokemon, you can attack with GG End GX to spoil their plans.

Blacephalon CEC 104 has a great attack, Fireworks Bomb, that allows you to distribute damage counters as you like among your opponent's Pokemon. Use this attack to pick off wounded Pokemon that your opponent has retreated. You can also use this attack to set up Garchomp & Giratina-GX UNM 146's Calamitous Slash attack. While it's obviously better when you have exactly three Prize cards remaining, it's still very useful at other points in the game as well.

Misdreavus UNB 77 is another Pokemon that has the potential to put a damage counter on any Pokemon your opponent has in play with its Ominous Eyes attack. You won't generally want to use this attack unless there are no other options, though, since Misdreavus UNB 77 only has 60 HP and is easily Knocked Out. Use Dusk Stone UNB 167 to search your deck for a copy of Mismagius UNB 78 whenever you can. Its main use is its Mysterious Message Ability that you can use to refill your hand to seven cards, at the cost of giving your opponent a Prize card.

Naganadel & Guzzlord-GX CEC 158 offers the use of its Chaotic Order GX attack that allows you to see all of your Prize cards for the remainder of the game. By using this attack, you can always choose the most useful Prize card whenever you Knock Out an opponent's Pokemon. Naganadel & Guzzlord-GX CEC 158 also has the Jet Pierce attack that deals 180 damage, which is a good amount of damage for three Energy.

This batch of Trainer cards all allow you to search for specific types of Trainer cards. Green's Exploration UNB 175 lets you find any two Trainer cards from your deck, but can only be played if you have no Pokemon in play with Abilities. Keep that in mind when deciding whether to play Naganadel & Guzzlord-GX CEC 158 or to evolve into Mismagius UNB 78. Guzma & Hala CEC 193 allows you to find a copy of Power Plant UNB 183, and can offer you the ability to find a Pokemon Tool or Special Energy if you discard two other cards from your hand. Pokegear 3.0 UNB 182 lets you search the top seven cards of your deck for any Supporter card found there. There's a number of good Supporters in this deck that you can find.

With Mysterious Treasure FLI 113 you can find any Pokemon from your deck at the cost of discarding one card from your hand. Tag Call CEC 206 can only find your Tag Team Pokemon if you use it as a means of finding Pokemon, but it can also find Tag Team Supporter cards as well.

Cynthia & Caitlin CEC 189 allows you to put any non-Cynthia & Caitlin CEC 189 Supporter card from your discard pile into your hand. One of the best choices to get is Green's Exploration UNB 175, which can be used to find two other Trainer cards that you might need. By discarding another card when you play it, Cynthia & Caitlin CEC 189 also allows you to draw three cards, and it's generally useful to do this whenever possible.

All of these cards are helpful when attacking. With Mallow & Lana CEC 198 and Switch CES 147, you can switch your own Active Pokemon with one from your Bench. This can be helpful to either save a Pokemon that's certain to be Knocked Out on the following turn, or to set up a Pokemon with a powerful attack. Great Catcher CEC 192 switches your opponent's Active Pokemon with one from their Bench, allowing you to gain extra damage by attacking a Pokemon with a Weakness to your Pokemon type, or to Knock Out a Pokemon that's already been damaged.

Lt. Surge's Strategy UNB 178 allows you to break one of the basic rules of the game. By being able to play additional Supporters in a single turn, you can set up some truly crazy turns. Lt. Surge's Strategy UNB 178 is a great card to get back when you play Cynthia & Caitlin CEC 189, which gives you additional opportunities to do crazy things.

Faba LOT 173 is a card that you can use to disrupt your opponent's strategy. By sending a Special Energy card to the Lost Zone, you can make it impossible for your opponent to use an important attack. By sending a Pokemon Tool or Stadium to the Lost Zone, you can deny your opponent of a special advantage they might get, or remove a disadvantage they give to your team. Faba LOT 173 can be quite useful at certain times, but there might be times that you'll have nothing good to use this card on, so having only one copy in this deck is a good amount. You can always use it again with Cynthia & Caitlin CEC 189 if you find that having multiple copies would be useful.

This deck plays more copies of Reset Stamp UNM 206 than most. This will help ensure that you'll be able to draw one when you need it. If you find you don't need it, Reset Stamp UNM 206 can be discarded when you play other cards that require you to discard a card from your hand. Reset Stamp UNM 206 helps out if you find yourself behind on Prize cards, and can help slow down an opponent's momentum.

While Energy Spinner UNB 170 is obviously more powerful when played on your first turn if you're going second, it's still a helpful Item that allows you to find a basic Energy card when you need it. It helps thin your deck out slightly, allowing you the possibility of drawing more useful cards on future turns. Tag Switch UNM 209 is most useful to allow you to move any type of Energy cards from an Active Garchomp & Giratina-GX UNM 146 to one on your Bench.

Both Counter Gain LOT 170 and Karate Belt UNM 201 make it easier to attack with a Pokemon if you have more Prize cards remaining than your opponent. Either of these has the possibility of allowing Garchomp & Giratina-GX UNM 146 to attack for 240 damage while only having two Energy cards attached to it.

While Naganadel & Guzzlord-GX CEC 158 has an Ability that you might be able to occasionally use, there will be many times that you'll want to play Power Plant UNB 183 in order to hinder your opponent's gameplay. Many decks rely on the Abilities of Pokemon-GX, and this card can make beating those decks a bit easier.

Wrapping Up

I really like the damage potential that Garchomp & Giratina-GX UNM 146 offers. To get that extra damage, you'll need to plan ahead some, but that's part of the fun that comes with playing a deck like this one.
