Searching Standard: Articuno-GX Deck

Hello and welcome to another episode of Searching Standard. Today, we'll be taking a look at a deck featuring Articuno-GX. I found this deck on Reddit where it was posted by a user named mustiestbriches. Let's take a look at the deck.

Articuno-GX is the star of this deck. Its Legendary Ascent Ability allows you to play it to your Bench and then switch it with your Active Pokemon. If you choose to switch it you can attach any amount of Water Energy to it by moving Water Energy from your other Pokemon in play to Articuno-GX. The correct amount to move is usually two or three (depending on whether you have an Energy in hand to play). This will allow you to use Articuno-GX's Ice Wing Attack to deal 130 points of damage to your opponent's Active Pokemon. Articuno-GX also has 170 HP, so it's capable of withstanding a hit from most opposing Pokemon. Taking a hit and surviving is important in this deck, as you will see.

Naganadel is another decent attacker in this deck, especially if you manage to get an Energy or two into your discard pile. Its Charging Up Ability allows you to attach an Energy card from your discard pile to Naganadel prior to attacking. Even if you're not able to reach the three Energy needed to attack with Naganadel, it's important to use Charging Up whenever possible so that you have Energy available to move to Articuno-GX when you play it.

Attacking with Suicune is a great way to pick off a wounded Pokemon from your opponent's Bench. By using its Frozen Flow Ability, you can make your opponent switch their Active Pokemon with one from their Bench, so while it's not as good as choosing the Benched Pokemon yourself, you can still get to a point where there's simply no good choice for your opponent to make. One nice thing about Suicune's Aurora Gain attack is that you'll heal 30 damage from it just by attacking. That can allow Suicune to stay alive longer than normal which allows you the chance to attach more Energy for Articuno-GX to use later on.

Oranguru has an attack that can be used if you have trouble finding any other Pokemon to attack with. However, its primary use is for its Instruct Ability as a way to draw additional cards once you've played out your hand.

Both of these cards help you take advantage of Articuno-GX's Legendary Ascent Ability multiple times. If your Articuno-GX has taken any damage you can return it to your hand (along with all cards attached to it). If possible, it's best to play a second copy of Articuno-GX prior to Acerola or Super Scoop Up so that you can move any Energy attached to the damaged one to the fresh one before putting it into your hand.

Max Potion is another fine way to keep a Pokemon alive and kicking in order to deny your opponent the opportunity to draw one of their Prize cards. The drawback of discarding all Energy attached to the Pokemon being healed is offset by Naganadel's Charging Up Ability.

Rescue Stretcher is a great way to return a previously KO'd Articuno-GX from your discard pile to your hand. If you don't have a way to return Articuno-GX to your hand via Super Scoop Up or Acerola, you can let it get knocked out and then use Rescue Stretcher to return it to your hand and keep the party going. It's also a great way to return a KO'd Naganadel to your hand if you have a Poipole on your Bench that's waiting to evolve.

Wishful Baton is a great Pokemon Tool to give to any of the Pokemon in this deck since none of them have attacks that require having more than three Energy. It's a great way to keep up the pressure on your opponent even if your Pokemon gets KO'd since you don't have to devote time to building up a new threat.

Cynthia, Lillie, and Sightseer are all great ways to draw cards. That's why Cynthia and Lillie are played in most decks. Sightseer not only helps you draw additional cards, but it allows you to discard Energy so that you are able to take advantage of Naganadel's Charging Up Ability.

Acro Bike is another card that can help you get Energy into your discard pile. It also helps you find the cards you need from your deck faster.

Guzma is a staple in most decks. Play Guzma to swap out a Pokemon you have with damage on it and swap in a fresh attacker while also switching your opponent's Active Pokemon with a Pokemon from their Bench that either doesn't have enough energy to attack or retreat, or a Pokemon that is already damaged that you can KO easily.

These three cards all help you find specific pieces needed to keep your deck running smoothly. Energy Loto helps find you an Energy to put into your hand, while Nest Ball and Ultra Ball help find an Articuno-GX or Naganadel.

Speaking of ways to find Naganadel, Ultra Space is the Stadium of choice for this deck specifically for that reason. It also helps you find Poipole as well. Field Blower is a great way to get rid of an opponent's Pokemon Tool causing you grief, such as Choice Band or Poison Barb.

Wrapping Up

Articuno-GX has the potential to deal 130 damage from out of nowhere. That's what makes this deck fun to try out.
