Flash Forward: Corviknight VMAX, Durant, and Kingdra Decks

Hello and welcome to Flash Forward, the article series that provides you with a sneak peek of some decks that will be Standard legal with the release of the next upcoming set. As I continue looking at decks created with cards from Japan's Single Strike Master and Rapid Strike Master expansions, I continue to get excited for these cards to be released in America. I have three new decks for you this week, so let's get started.

Corviknight VMAX Deck

We begin this week by looking at a deck featuring Corviknight VMAX. Let's check out the deck.

New Card Translations

Corviknight V – Metal – HP210
Basic Pokemon

[M] Clutch: The Defending Pokemon can’t retreat during your ppponent’s next turn.

[M][M][C] Sky Hurricane: 190 damage. This Pokemon can’t use Sky Hurricane during your next turn.

When your Pokemon V is Knocked Out, your opponent takes 2 Prize cards.

Weakness: Fire (x2)
Resistance: Grass (-30)
Retreat: 1

Corviknight VMAX – Metal – HP320
VMAX Pokemon – Evolves from Corviknight V

Ability: Luster Body
Prevent all effects of your opponent’s Abilities done to this Pokémon.

[M][M][C] G-Max Hurricane: 240 damage. This Pokemon can’t use G-Max Hurricane during your next turn.

When your Pokemon VMAX is Knocked Out, your opponent takes 3 Prize cards.

Weakness: Fire (x2)
Resistance: Grass (-30)
Retreat: 0

Bronzor – Metal – HP60
Basic Pokemon

[M][C] Ram: 30 damage.

Weakness: Fire (x2)
Resistance: Grass (-30)
Retreat: 1

Bronzong – Metal – HP110
Stage 1 – Evolves from Bronzor

Ability: Metal Trans
As often as you like during your turn, you may move a [M] Energy from 1 of your Pokemon to another.1 of your Pokemon.

[M][C][C] Zen Headbutt: 70 damage.

Weakness: Fire (x2)
Resistance: Grass (-30)
Retreat: 3

Cheryl – Trainer
Supporter

Heal all damage from each of your Evolution Pokemon. Then, discard all Energy attached to the Pokemon you healed in this way.

You may play only 1 Supporter card during your turn.

Corviknight VMAX is the main attacker in this deck. With its G-Max Hurricane attack, you can deal 240 damage to your opponent's Active Pokemon. The unfortunate part of this attack is that Corviknight VMAX cannot use G-Max Hurricane during its next turn. However, there is a way to get around this drawback very easily, as long as you have two copies of Corviknight VMAX in play. Note that Corviknight VMAX has a Retreat Cost of zero, allowing it to retreat for free. If you have two Corviknight VMAX's in play, you can attack with one, retreating it on the following turn. Bring up the other Corviknight VMAX to your Active Position, and attack with its G-Max Hurricane attack. Then, repeat the process on the following turns.

One thing that makes this all possible is Bronzong's Metal Trans Ability. This Ability allows you to move Metal Energy from one Pokemon to another. This allows you to use G-Max Hurricane easily with a minimum of three Energy in play. You can also play Cheryl to heal all of the damage from your Evolution Pokemon, but make sure that you've moved any attached Energy to a Pokemon that has no damage in order to avoid discarding any Energy cards.

Durant / Shuckle Deck

The next deck I have for you is a 'mill' deck. 'Mill' decks attempt to win the game by forcing their opponent to discard all of the cards from their deck into their discard pile. Let's take a look at the deck.

New Card Translations

Durant – Grass – HP90
Basic Pokemon

[G] Vise Grip: 20 damage.

[C][C] Devour: For each of your Durant in play, discard the top card of your opponent’s deck.

Weakness: Fire (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 1

Billowing Fan – Trainer
Item (Rapid Strike)

Return a Special Energy attached to 1 of your opponent’s Pokemon to the bottom of your opponent’s deck.

You may play any number of Item cards during your turn.

Bruno – Trainer
Supporter (Single Strike)

Shuffle your hand into your deck, then draw 4 cards. If any of your Pokemon were Knocked Out during your opponent’s last turn, draw 7 cards instead.

You may play only 1 Supporter card during your turn.

Level Ball – Trainer
Item

Search your deck for a Pokemon with 90 HP or less, reveal it, and put it into your hand. Then, shuffle your deck.

You may play any number of Item cards during your turn.

This deck has both Durant and Shuckle VIV 85 that have attacks that further your goal of 'milling' your opponent's deck. The contents of your opening hand will determine which Pokemon you start the 'mill' train with. Durant will require a copy of Twin Energy RCL 174 in order to use its Devour attack. Devour will 'mill' one card from your opponent's deck for each copy of Durant you have in play. Alternatively, Shuckle VIV 85 requires a single Fighting Energy 6 to use its Deck Distiller attack. This attack has you flip a coin until you get tails. For each heads result you get, your opponent will 'mill' one card. To maximize the effectiveness of this attack, you'll want to get a copy of Glimwood Tangle DAA 162 into play.

Since your main route to victory is running your opponent out of cards in their deck, games will typically go longer than games that feature quick, aggressive decks. Make sure to use Crushing Hammer SSH 159 as a means of removing Energy from your opponent's Pokemon so they cannot use their high-powered attacks. Also, make Lillie's Poke Doll CEC 197 your Active Pokemon, so your opponent will need to waste a turn Knocking it Out. This works well when you have Oricorio-GX CEC 95 in play, as you'll be able to draw three cards with Oricorio-GX CEC 95's Dance of Tribute Ability when Lillie's Poke Doll CEC 197 gets Knocked Out.

Kingdra / Frosmoth Deck

The final deck I have for you features a bit of Energy acceleration. Let's take a look at it.

New Card Translations

Horsea – Water – HP60
Basic Pokemon

[W] Smokescreen: If the Defending Pokemon tries to attack during your opponent’s next turn, your opponent flips a coin. If tails, that attack does nothing.

Weakness: Lightning (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 1

Seadra – Water – HP90
Stage 1 – Evolves from Horsea

[W] Water Gun: 40 damage.

Weakness: Lightning (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 1

Kingdra – Water – HP150
Stage 1 – Evolves from Seadra

Ability: Lord of the Ocean Depths
When your Active Pokemon is Knocked Out by damage from an opponent’s attack, you may choose any number of [W] Energy attached to that Pokemon and move them to this Pokemon.

[W] Aqua Burst: This attack does 40 damage times the number of [W] Energy attached to this Pokemon.

Weakness: Lightning (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 1

Snom – Water – HP50
Basic Pokemon

[W] Call for Family: Search your deck for a Basic Pokemon and put it onto your bench. Then, shuffle your deck.

Weakness: Metal (x2)
Resistance: None
Retreat: 2

Bruno – Trainer
Supporter (Single Strike)

Shuffle your hand into your deck, then draw 4 cards. If any of your Pokemon were Knocked Out during your opponent’s last turn, draw 7 cards instead.

You may play only 1 Supporter card during your turn.

Level Ball – Trainer
Item

Search your deck for a Pokemon with 90 HP or less, reveal it, and put it into your hand. Then, shuffle your deck.

You may play any number of Item cards during your turn.

With this deck, it's important to get a pair of Kingdra in play alongside a copy of Frosmoth SSH 64. To buy the time you need to set this up, you can rely on Snorlax VIV 131. Thanks to Snorlax VIV 131's Gormandize Ability, you can play as many cards from your hand as you're able to and then draw back up to seven cards to end your turn. You won't want to attack with Snorlax VIV 131, though. Just use it to soak up some attacks to buy you the time needed to set things up.

Once you have two copies of Kingdra and a Frosmoth SSH 64 in play, the fun can begin. Use Frosmoth SSH 64's Ice Dance Ability to attach as much Water Energy 3 as you can to Kingdra, and then make Kingdra your Active Pokemon. This allows Kingdra to maximize the damage output of its Aqua Burst attack, which deals 40 damage for each Water Energy 3 attached to Kingdra. If your Active Kingdra gets Knocked Out, you can transfer the Energy attached to it to your Benched Kingdra thanks to the Benched Kingdra's Lord of the Ocean Depths Ability. This allows you to continue attacking for large amounts of damage.
