Flash Forward: Charizard, Galarian Obstagoon, and Galarian Perrserker Decks

Hello and welcome back to Flash Forward, the article series that provides you with a sneak peek of some decks that will be Standard legal with the release of the next upcoming set. We're wrapping down the time until Sword and Shield releases. Once that happens, we'll begin seeing decks with cards from Japan's VMAX Rising set, but until that happens, I'll keep featuring decks with Sword and Shield cards. This week I have three new decks for you that feature some great new cards alongside some of our current Standard cards. Let's get started.

Charizard / Heatran-GX Deck

We'll get started this week by taking a look at a deck that features Charizard TEU 14. First, take a look at the decklist.

New Card Translations

Sobble – Water – HP60
Basic Pokemon

[W] Water Gun: 20 damage.

Weakness: Lightning (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 1

Drizzile – Water – HP90
Stage 1 – Evolves from Sobble

Ability: Shady Business
When you play this Pokemon from your hand to evolve 1 of your Pokemon during your turn, you may search your deck for 1 Trainer card, reveal it, and put it into your hand. Then, shuffle your deck.

[W][C] Water Drip: 30 damage.

Weakness: Lightning (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 1

Inteleon – Water – HP160
Stage 2 – Evolves from Drizzile

Ability: Shady Dealings
When you play this Pokemon from your hand to evolve 1 of your Pokemon during your turn, you may search your deck for 2 Trainer cards, reveal them, and put them into your hand. Then, shuffle your deck.

[W][C] Aqua Bullet: 120 damage. This attack also does 20 damage to 1 of your opponent’s Benched Pokemon. (Don’t apply Weakness and Resistance for Benched Pokemon.)

Weakness: Lighting (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 1

Zacian V – Metal – HP220
Basic Pokemon

Ability: Intrepid Sword
Once during your turn, you may look at the top 3 cards of your deck and attach any number of [M] Energy you find there to this Pokemon. Put the other cards into your hand. If you use this Ability, your turn ends.

[M][M][M] Brave Blade: 230 damage. During your next turn, this Pokemon can’t attack.

When your Pokemon V is Knocked Out, your opponent takes 2 Prize cards.

Weakness: Fire (x2)
Resistance: Grass (-30)
Retreat: 2

Great Ball – Trainer
Item

Look at the top 7 cards of your deck. You may reveal a Pokemon you find there and put it into your hand. Shuffle the other cards back into your deck.

You may play as many Item cards as you like during your turn (before your attack).

Ordinary Rod – Trainer
Item

Shuffle up to 2 Pokemon and up to 2 Basic Energy cards from your discard pile into your deck.

You may play as many Item cards as you like during your turn (before your attack).

Quick Ball – Trainer
Item

You must discard 1 card from your hand in order to play this card. Search your deck for a Basic Pokemon, reveal it, and put it into your hand. Then, shuffle your deck.

You may play as many Item cards as you like during your turn (before your attack).

Charizard TEU 14's Continuous Blaze Ball attack deals a minimum of 130 damage when you use it. That's pretty good considering you can build up the rest of your team while still using this attack turn after turn thanks to Charizard TEU 14's Roaring Resolve Ability. 130 damage to the opponent with the only drawback being to take 20 damage seems like a good deal.

This deck also runs the Sobble SWSH 54 - Drizzile SWSH 56 - Inteleon SWSH 58 line. Since there's no Water Energy 3 in the deck, their sole purpose is the use of the Shady Business Ability on Drizzile SWSH 56 and the Shady Dealings Ability on Inteleon SWSH 58. Using these Abilities will allow you to search your deck for specific Trainer cards.

Galarian Obstagoon / Sableye-V Deck

The next deck I have for you features the new Zigzagoon evolution, Galarian Obstagoon SWSH 119. Let's take a look at the deck.

New Card Translations

Galarian Zigzagoon – Darkness – HP70
Basic Pokemon

Ability: Tantrum Head
Once during your turn (before your attack), when you play this card from your hand onto your Bench, you may put 1 damage counter on 1 of your opponent’s Pokemon.

[D][C] Surprise Attack: 30 damage. Flip a coin. If tails, this attack does nothing.

Weakness: Grass (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 1

Galarian Linoone – Darkness – HP100
Stage 1 – Evolves from Galarian Zigzagoon

[D] Night Slash: 20 damage. Switch this Pokemon with 1 of your Benched Pokemon.

[D][C][C] Hammer In: 70 damage.

Weakness: Grass (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 2

Galarian Obstagoon – Darkness – HP160
Stage 2 – Evolves from Galarian Linoone

Ability: Violent Shout
When you play this Pokemon from your hand to evolve 1 of your Pokemon during your turn, you may put 3 damage counters on 1 of your opponent’s Pokemon.

[D][C] Obstruct: 90 damage. During your opponent’s next turn, prevent all damage done to this Pokemon by your opponent’s Basic Pokemon.

Weakness: Grass (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 2

Sableye V – Darkness – HP170
Basic Pokemon

[D] Ore Search: Put a Trainer card from your discard pile into your hand.

[D][D] Wicked Claws: 10+ damage. This attack does 60 more damage for each damage counter on your opponent’s Active Pokemon.

When your Pokemon V is Knocked Out, your opponent takes 2 Prize cards.

Weakness: Grass (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 2

Evolution Incense – Trainer
Item

Search your deck for an Evolution Pokemon, reveal it, and put it into your hand. Then, shuffle your deck.

You may play as many Item cards as you like during your turn (before your attack).

Marnie – Trainer
Supporter

Both players shuffle their hands without looking and put them at the bottom of their decks. Then, you draw 5 cards and your opponent draws 4 cards.

You may play only 1 Supporter card during your turn (before your attack).

With the Galarian Zigzagoon SWSH 117 - Galarian Linoone SWSH 118 - Galarian Obstagoon SWSH 119 line, you'll be able to put damage counters onto your opponent's Pokemon, regardless of whether they are in the Active Pokemon position or on the Bench. This can be helpful in picking off Pokemon that have already taken damage and retreated to the relative safety of the Bench. Galarian Obstagoon SWSH 119 is also very impressive when playing against most decks thanks to its Obstruct attack. This attack deals 90 damage, but perhaps more importantly makes it so that your opponent's Basic Pokemon can deal no damage to Galarian Obstagoon SWSH 119 during their next turn. Since many Pokemon-GX and all Pokemon-V are Basic Pokemon, you might make it so that your opponent is unable to defeat Galarian Obstagoon SWSH 119.

Galarian Perrserker / Lucario & Melmetal-GX Deck

The final deck I have for you features the newest evolution of Meowth. Let's take a look at it.

New Card Translations

Galarian Meowth – Metal – HP60
Basic Pokemon

Ability: Evolution Roar
Once during your turn (before your attack), you may discard 2 cards from your hand. If you do, search your deck for 1 Galarian Perrserker, reveal it, and put it into your hand. Then, shuffle your deck.

[M][C] Scratch: 20 damage.

Weakness: Fire (x2)
Resistance: Grass (-30)
Retreat: 2

Galarian Perrserker – Metal – HP120
Stage 1 – Evolves from Galarian Meowth

Ability: Steely Spirit
The attacks of your [M] Pokemon do 20 more damage to your opponent’s Active Pokemon.

[M][M][C] Metal Claw: 70 damage.

Weakness: Fire (x2)
Resistance: Grass (-30)
Retreat: 2

Retreat: 2

Air Balloon – Trainer
Item

Pokemon Tool: Attach a Pokemon Tool to 1 of your Pokemon that doesn’t already have a Pokemon Tool attached to it.

The Retreat Cost of the Pokemon this card is attached to is [C][C] less.

Metal Saucer – Trainer
Item

Attach a [M] Energy card from your discard pile to 1 of your Benched [M] Pokemon.

You may play as many Item cards as you like during your turn (before your attack).

Professor’s Research – Trainer
Supporter (Professor Magnolia)

Discard your hand. Then, draw 7 cards.

You may play only 1 Supporter card during your turn (before your attack).

Quick Ball – Trainer
Item

You must discard 1 card from your hand in order to play this card. Search your deck for a Basic Pokemon, reveal it, and put it into your hand. Then, shuffle your deck.

You may play as many Item cards as you like during your turn (before your attack).

Aurora Energy – Special Energy

When you attach this card from your hand to a Pokemon, discard a card from your hand.

While in play, this card provides every type of Energy but provides only 1 Energy at a time.

The Galarian Meowth found in this deck isn't being released in the upcoming Sword and Shield expansion. It was originally released in Japan in their Zacian/Zamazenta Box. I'm hopeful that it will be released soon in America as one of our promo cards. Thanks to its Evolution Roar Ability, I can't stress how important this version of Galarian Meowth is. Evolution Roar allows you to discard two cards from your hand in order to search your deck for a Galarian Perrserker SWSH 128 to put into your hand. The Galarian Meowth that's coming out in Sword and Shield doesn't have this ability, so while you could substitute it for the promo Galarian Meowth in this deck, the deck simply won't run quite as smoothly. Let's keep our fingers crossed that the correct version of Galarian Meowth is released as a promo soon.

Wrapping Up

As you can see, once Sword and Shield releases there will be a variety of decks that are viable for tournament play. Some feature Pokemon-V, while others do not.  One thing is for sure... our new meta will be anything but predictable.

What do you think of these decks? Do you have any suggestions for improvements? Leave a comment below and let me know what Pokemon you'd like to see featured in next week's decks.

And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue showing you innovative decks using cards from upcoming sets. I'll see you then (in the future!).
