Exploring Expanded: Towering Grace

Milotic FLF 23Welcome to our first edition of Exploring Expanded! These articles will take a look at decks in the Expanded Format. Be they creative concepts or budget builds, if you're looking for some cool decks to play in Expanded we got you covered! Sometimes cards from the past aren't prepared to deal with cards from the future. A lot of cards in Expanded only effect EX Pokemon, not GX Pokemon. This can lead to some effects that may have been mediocre at the time of its original release becoming something so strong it can't be ignored.

The case study for today comes in the form of a Milotic! Released in Flashfire, its ability Energy Grace reads as follows: Once during your turn (before your attack) you may Knock Out this Pokémon. If you do, attach 3 basic Energy from your discard pile to 1 of your Pokémon (excluding Pokémon-EX). You may lose a prize, but that's a LOT of Energy that can go on quick. Especially with Tag Team-GX Pokemon and needing extra Energy in play to get their full effects, this could have you overwhelming your opponent before they can fully set up!

When Magikarp & Wailord-GX was released more people were worried about its potential to stall than its potential to attack. Needing seven Energy to use Towering Splash to the fullest seemed like too much to do consistently. With the tools that the Expanded Format provides as well as our new friend Milotic we can get Magikarp & Wailord-GX running as early as turn two. Can you imagine just demolishing your opponent to the point they can't come back that early on? You won't have to any longer! Let's take a look at our deck, Towering Grace, and see what makes it run!

Battle Compressor Team Flare Gear PHF 92So you need to get Energy into the discard pile and Battle Compressor Team Flare Gear is going to be your best friend here. What makes it even nicer is there are a million cards that can help grab it! Trainer's Mail can do the trick if you need it, and there's ways to draw it like with a lucky Acro Bike that can even toss an Energy for you as well. The real card that makes it amazing is Green's Exploration. With it, you can draw the two Battle Compressors all at once and get all the Energy you need in the discard pile! This is why we used Feebas CIN 26 instead of Feebas DRM 28 in the deck, to keep it easy to use. Yes, Milotic has an ability which gets in the way, but it shouldn't exactly be sitting on your bench long.

With this in mind, Random Receiver can also grab it very quickly. It can also grab your major draw power for the deck in Professor Juniper. Most of the cards in your deck are item cards. When you're not trying to use Green's Search, this can allow you to play out your entire hand then draw it back up to do even more to get yourself set up better!

Let's take a look at some of the other Items you'll be using. You need seven Energy to fully use Towering Splash, and Max Elixer can help get the last one you need to run with the big boys! As you'll be purposefully going down on prizes, Counter Catcher might come in handy to get something on the bench you can really enjoy wiping out. Take a bit of damage on your big Tag Team-GX? Scramble Switch can get all these Energy you've built up onto another Magikarp & Wailord-GX so you can keep the pain coming!

You've also got Ultra Ball to search out any Pokemon you need while possibly discarding Energy as well. On that note, in Expanded there's so many great options for finding Water Type Pokemon. Brooklet Hill can do the trick while helping in the stadium war but the real hit here is Dive Ball. There's not a single Pokemon in this deck it can't grab for you in an instant.

This deck offers some serious consistency while providing insane attacking power and we'd love to hear if you gave it a try or some tweaks! Tell us all about it in the comments below, or let the beck builder herself know over on Twitter @LiteralGrill. Until next time, stay lit trainers!
